The rest of your time is spent:
Playa DominicalGreen Iguana Surf Camp is located about halfway down the coast, on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. Though Playa Dominical is famous mainly for its world class surfing, the area is also well known among seasoned travelers as one of the few remaining Costa Rican beach towns that is still relatively undeveloped. It's a truly unique quality of Dominical; we're not in the heart of what could be called “typical tourism” here in Costa Rica , and instead of the high-rise hotels and fast food you'll find on other beaches, in Playa Dominical the rainforest continues right out of the mountains and virtually covers the town. To put it simply, Dominical is rustic. It is a very small town that is usually frequented by surfers and families looking for a truer taste of what Costa Rica is really like… and oh yeah, of course, good waves! There are some of the finest beaches in Costa Rica right here. Crowds simply aren't an issue on the sands of Playa Dominical, and after spending some days here and then returning to the packed beaches of Europe or the USA, you will find it hard to trust your memory that such a beach offered so much solitude and privacy; there is certainly never the scenario of stepping over bodies to try and find a spot to put your towel down. Bordering the northern edge of Dominical is the Rio Baru, a beautiful river that weaves its way through the rainforest, and then forms a mangrove-lined estuary about three hundred meters down the beach from the surf camp. Many different types of rainforest animals depend upon the estuary, and over two hundred thirty different species of tropical birds have been counted along its banks. Underneath the water's surface, some worthy gamefish can be had with a rod and reel – the estuary is full of snapper that reach up to ten pounds, with their big brothers swimming just outside in the surf. And of course, green iguanas are all over the place – they practically own Playa Dominical! Right across the Rio Baru, just to the north of town, lies Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge. Hacienda Baru is composed of over forty acres of virgin rainforest, supports a great wealth of animal and plant life, and is part of the important Asana wildlife corridor. Hacienda Baru is a special place, and it's not just for the rainforest animals; it also serves as a “line in the sand” for future development to the north, which helps keep the whole area pristine. Overlooking the town of Playa Dominical lies a stretch of the Talamanca mountain range that's completely covered with thick virgin rainforest. It's rises up at such a steep angle, it's hard to understand how it all hangs on; but it does, offering every shade of green that can be found in a tropical jungle - and if you only had the time, you'd find every color you can imagine in the great variety of tropical wildflowers that live not just in the rainforest, but right along the road you'll walk when you're here in Playa Dominical.
